In the midst of what has been a very difficult year, Pike Countians, once again, came through.
The Pike County Salvation Army Empty Bowls Luncheon raised $18,614. That is more than had been raised in any of the event’s previous 10 years.
“Prayers were answered,†said Kim May, local Salvation Army director. “I didn’t know what to do except pray. The Pike County Salvation Army is so thankful, so grateful, so very blessed. We cannot thank the people of Pike County enough for their generosity.â€
May said, even with the restrictions of COVID-19, Empty Bowls 2020 had more sponsors than ever before.
“The generosity of our sponsors was amazing,†she said. “And, this year, many people gave more than the $20 price of the Empty Bowls ticket. Some people just came in to make a donation. Pike County is made up of very generous and caring people.â€
May said she, her employees and the advisory board stepped out in faith in having the Empty Bowls Luncheon.
“We had postponed the luncheon twice and just decided to go ahead and do the best we could,†May said. “We hoped for the best. We never imagined the generous response.â€
May said she believes the Empty Bowls sponsors and the community responded in such a giving way because the Salvation Army is a non-profit organization and it really does do the most good it can. “And, too, the Salvation Army helps local people, our friends and neighbors, and others see what we do,†May said.
“There is no way to thank every person who gave, everyone who volunteered and everyone who supported Empty Bowls 2020 so generously. We have been blessed, very blessed.â€
